THE FULL STORY

Erika Dang doesn’t just think outside the box, she invents it.

In the Venn diagram of making stuff, designers and producers tend to be their own circles. Dang’s talents, however, exist in the rare and magical overlap—she does everything from research to production, and puts the “extra” into ordinary along the way. Her most recent packaging innovation, for example, is a gua sha-inspired eye-cream applicator that sticks to the lid with a magnet. Snap.

She has previously held the title of Senior Product Designer at brands

like Lord Jones and Happy Dance, but that’s just because Badass-Do-It-All Design Boss had too many hyphens. Need a dropper? Worried about greenwashing? Need a solution for changing ingredients, like, say thermal-printable varnish? Dang’s got you.

She is also master colorist, both at the drawing board and the kitchen table. (Her cheese boards alone—spin through her Insta @erikadang—are worthy of still-lifes by Matisse.) She honed her superpower at the Otis College of Art & Design, and her original combinations are miles ahead of the trend, say, like when she was the first to make metallic pearlescent inks a thing. Her passion runs through everything she does like a deep, indelible dye, and, come press check, you might find her fastidiously smelling the ink on paper.

In her spare time, she cooks, runs, and repeats. Food is her love language, and as a Chinese American, it’s also how she holds on to her heritage.

She frequents farmer’s markets, alt rock concerts, and horror movies—which she quotes long after she probably should. She also loves ruffles, Hitchcock, cats, and anything with skulls on it.
